The Slaps – Wettest Wing

Chicago post-rock trio The Slaps return with “Wettest Wing”, a track that channels the early 2000s spirit of the city’s experimental scene. Guitarist Rand Kelly, bassist Ramsey Bell, and drummer Josh Resing blend jazzy post-rock improvisation with stripped-down folk atmospheres.

The song evokes the era of Jim O’Rourke and Wilco, characterised by jazzy drumwork, fingerstyle acoustic guitar, and understated piano. Bell’s fretless bass work stands out, adding fluid movement beneath the track’s gentle build and release structure. The band describes it as “taking a walk” and “making a fire with wet wood”—apt descriptions for music that feels both deliberate and organic.

Following last year’s “Mudglimmer”, which saw them lean harder into their avant-garde impulses, The Slaps have stayed busy. They’ve moonlighted as Finn Wolfhard’s backing band on tour, released the ambient “Mud Tracks” EP earlier this year (featuring a remix from The Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop), and completed their own headlining tour plus a KEXP session.

The band is currently wrapping up a nearly sold-out tour with Post Animal before returning to NYC for a December 18 headline show at Nightclub 101.
